What is a margin account?
A margin account allows you to invest on margin, or with borrowed money (a margin loan). Margin loans use fully-owned securities held in your WFNInvest account as collateral. Margin loans typically have a lower interest rate than conventional bank loans or credit cards and there are no set-up costs or annual fees. According to Federal Reserve Board regulations, qualified customers can borrow up to 50% of the value of eligible securities held in their account(s) and must maintain a predetermined equity level. You cannot utilize assets held in an IRA or custodial account to qualify for a margin loan.

Margin borrowing is not suitable for everyone. Using margin to buy additional securities can offer greater potential returns, but also incurs additional risks. If a price drop in a margined security causes your account's equity to fall below its maintenance requirement, you will receive a margin call. To fulfill a margin call you must raise your account's equity to the minimum acceptable level by either selling securities, depositing cash, or depositing securities that are already fully paid for.

Is there a minimum number of shares I can buy?
WFNInvest has no minimum trade size, but the number of shares you are trading must always be a whole number, greater than zero.

How do I know that my transactions are secure?
WFNInvest incorporates powerful electronic security measures. All customer data and trading information is transferred over the Internet using the highest industry-standard encryption technology that is designed to be secure. Additionally, we employ proprietary measures, including requiring accountholders to use a User ID and Personal Identification Number (PIN); recommending the use of 128-bit, 2-way data encryption technologies (a powerful level of online encryption), and 24-hour monitoring of access to WFNInvest data and information.

Can I write checks and make charges and ATM withdraws on a debit card against my brokerage account?
Free check writing is available for all WFNInvest accounts. Our Visa Debit Card is available for individual and joint accounts only.

How do taxes impact my investments?
Whether you gain or lose money on your investments, there are tax implications to consider. For more information, please contact a WFNInvest representative at 1-877-WFN-INVEST (877-936-4683) or visit our Learning center's course on tax.

Which web browser is best with WFNInvest?
Any current browsers will show WFNInvest in its best light. If you want access to the streaming video, you will need the latest versions of any browser such as Netscape 4.0 or better, Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.0 or better, or America Online -- as long as the one you choose has 128-bit encryption.
