The annual rate of return on an investment, expressed as a percentage. For bonds and notes, the coupon rate divided by the market price. This is not an accurate measure of total return, since it does not factor in capital gains. For securities, the annual dividends divided by the purchase price. 9. yield advantage


The yield on a corporation's convertible securities minus the dividend yield on its common stock.

10. yield burning


An illegal practice in which an underwriter places excessive markups on bonds used to complete some types of municipal bond offerings. By marking up the price, the yield will fall, which is known as "burning" the yield.

11. yield curve


A curve that shows the relationship between yields and maturity dates for a set of similar bonds, usually Treasuries, at a given point in time.

12. yield elbow


Point on the yield curve at which the interest rate is the highest.

13. yield equivalence


The yield needed on a taxable investment in order to match the tax-free return offered on a municipal bond; calculated by dividing the tax-exempt yield by (1 minus the investor's marginal tax rate). also called equivalent taxable yield.

14. yield spread


The differences in yields on different types of debt securities, a function of supply and demand, credit rating, and anticipated interest rate changes.

Yield that would be realized on a callable bond in the event that the bond was redeemed by the issuer on the next available call date.
