Scholarships and private grants are a wonderful way to get additional funds for you or your child's education. They often require an application and can be quite difficult to obtain, but the extra work is usually worth it. Most of these programs provide money with little to no strings attached, and often the prestige of the scholarship is as valuable as the monetary gain.

It is important to remember that you need not be a rocket scientist to get a scholarship or grant. Many groups earmark their offerings for specific genders, interests, incomes, activities, races, religions, college majors, ages, etc. With a little digging, online, in books, through local high schools and even the colleges themselves, many students find scholarships that are well within their reach. Also, encourage your children to pursue their individual interests (fencing, lacrosse, etc.); it may help them stand out. Plus, there may be sports-specific scholarships available to them.
