The alternative minimum tax is designed to ensure that those people with high deductions pay at least a certain amount of taxes on their incomes. The AMT prohibits you from claiming certain deductions. Determining whether you must pay the AMT is extremely complex, but may be necessary if you have a large number of deductions and credits on your return. Consult your tax attorney for further information.
